Rafaela Lopez
A visual artist working between Paris and New York, Rafaela Lopez has a practice that spans video, performance, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and collaborative projects, with particular attention to marginalised creative practices, popular cultures and social contexts. Each project seeks a language specific to the communities involved, questioning the social role of art and the possibility of escaping an assigned status. Her images often combine a documentary sensibility with glitter, graphic interventions, overlays and transparencies. Vibrant rhythms and intimate narratives run through the work without ever resorting to pathos. It allows the energy and sensitivity of the people she portrays to emerge, while sharpening her analysis of the mainstream culture surrounding them.
