Renaud Muraire
Born in Nice, Renaud Muraire lives and works in Paris. His paintings explore religious iconography through the visual codes of the present: youth, colour, fashion, photography and intimacy. Deeply drawn to fifteenth and sixteenth century representations of the Virgin and Child, he admires both their meditative calm and the intense planes of colour that contrast with the scenes’ symbolic charge. Rather than reproducing these images, Muraire constructs his own compositions, shifting gestures and postures to reveal the human figure behind the icon. Paintings may be placed in dialogue with AI-generated photographs, showing how the same subject changes radically from one medium to another. His work does not illustrate belief; it asks how sacred symbols continue to circulate today and how spirituality, beauty and the search for meaning still shape contemporary images.
