LINA SOUALEM

Born in Paris to an Algerian father and a Palestinian mother, Lina Soualem is a director, screenwriter and actress. She studied history and political science at the Sorbonne, specialising in contemporary Arab societies, and worked as a programmer for the Buenos Aires human rights film festival before turning to directing. Her documentaries work from within her own family to reach collective history, weaving home movies, archives and her own camera. Leur Algérie followed her paternal grandparents after they separated, and premiered at Visions du Réel. Bye Bye Tibériade traced four generations of Palestinian women around her mother, the actress Hiam Abbass, premiered at the Giornate degli Autori in Venice, and was nominated for the César for Best Documentary.
